Preliminary Lessons from Chile and Haiti:

What the Bay Area Should (and Should Not) Expect from a Major Earthquake.

The recent M8.8 Chile and M7.0 Haiti earthquakes hold valuable lessons for businesses and residents in the Bay Area. The vast majority of well-engineered structures performed well, and the vast majority of poorly-engineered structures did not. However, there were important surprises from which we can learn to improve our own outcomes in a major quake.

Having recently returned from Chile and Haiti helping clients and performing general reconnaissance, Andy Thompson will present his reflections, discussing the performance of buildings, bridges, transportation systems and industrial facilities, as well as insurance, economic, and social issues. Andy Thompson is an Associate at Arup and co-author of Peace of Mind in Earthquake Country.

Public Comment

At this time, members of the public may address the Task Force on items of interest that are within the subject matter jurisdiction of the Task Force but are not on today’s agenda.  Public comment will be taken following each agendized item.  Each member of the public may address the Task Force for up to three minutes, unless otherwise announced by the Chair.
